How to Get Ozempic, Who Qualifies, and What Changes for Weight Loss
How to get Ozempic: a licensed prescriber writes it and a licensed pharmacy fills it. See who qualifies, online options, and where compounded drugs fit.
Getting Ozempic is a two-part process: a licensed prescriber decides whether it fits your medical situation, and a licensed pharmacy dispenses it. What trips people up is everything in between — whether you qualify, whether an online visit counts, and whether you should be asking for Ozempic at all if your goal is weight loss.
Do you need a prescription for Ozempic?
Yes. Ozempic is a prescription-only medicine in the United States, in both its injection and tablet forms.18 The Medication Guide describes it as "an injectable prescription medicine," and Novo Nordisk's own pharmacy service answers the question of getting a GLP-1 without a prescription with a plain no: you need to speak to a licensed health care provider.17
The FDA's advice is the same: get a prescription from your doctor and fill it at a state-licensed pharmacy.4
Can you buy Ozempic over the counter?
No. There is no over-the-counter Ozempic or any over-the-counter semaglutide in the U.S. Sellers that skip the prescription are not legitimate pharmacies.4
The FDA has issued warning letters to stop the distribution of illegally marketed semaglutide, cautioning that such products may be counterfeit and could contain the wrong or harmful ingredients.4 It specifically warns against counterfeit Ozempic, which could contain too little, too much or no active ingredient at all, and against products labeled "for research use only" or "not for human consumption" that are sold to consumers with dosing instructions.4
Who qualifies for Ozempic?
Ozempic is FDA approved for adults with type 2 diabetes. Its three labeled uses are improving blood sugar control alongside diet and exercise; reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease; and reducing the risk of kidney decline, kidney failure and cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.1
Some people should not take it regardless of diagnosis. The label rules out anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, anyone with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), and anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or its ingredients.1 It is not known whether Ozempic is safe and effective in children.1 Women planning a pregnancy are advised to stop at least 2 months beforehand because semaglutide takes a long time to clear.1
The Medication Guide asks patients to tell their provider about past pancreas problems, diabetic retinopathy, severe stomach problems such as gastroparesis, planned surgery under anesthesia or deep sedation, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and every other medicine they take.1 Our safety page lists those warnings in full.
Can anyone get Ozempic?
No. A prescriber has to judge that it is appropriate for you, and outside type 2 diabetes there is no FDA-approved reason to prescribe Ozempic.1 A clinician can legally prescribe an approved drug for an unlabeled use, but that is a medical judgment, and for weight management there is an approved semaglutide product made for the purpose: Wegovy.2
How to get on Ozempic for weight loss
If your goal is weight loss and you do not have type 2 diabetes, the semaglutide product FDA approved for that purpose is Wegovy, not Ozempic.2 Ozempic's label does not include weight management, so using it for weight loss alone would be off-label.1
Wegovy is approved, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, to reduce excess body weight and maintain the loss long term in:2
- adults and children aged 12 and older with obesity
- adults with overweight and at least one weight-related condition
When Wegovy was first approved in June 2021, the FDA described the population as people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or greater, or 27 kg/m² or greater with at least one weight-related condition.3 Wegovy is also approved to cut cardiovascular risk in adults with established heart disease and obesity or overweight.2
There are now two ways to take it. Wegovy injection is given weekly, and the Wegovy pill — once-daily oral semaglutide 25 mg at maintenance — was approved on December 22, 2025, as the first oral GLP-1 for weight management.92 Pricing for each is on Wegovy cost.
The two drugs should not be combined: the Wegovy label says it should not be used with other semaglutide-containing products or any other GLP-1 receptor agonist.2 For a side-by-side view, see Ozempic vs Wegovy.
How to get prescribed Ozempic
The practical route is an appointment — in person or by telehealth — with a licensed clinician who reviews your diagnosis, history and current medicines, then sends a prescription to a pharmacy. The steps usually run like this:
- Book a visit with a primary care doctor, an endocrinologist or a licensed telehealth provider.
- Bring your history. Your diagnosis and recent lab results, a list of current medicines (especially insulin or a sulfonylurea, which raise the risk of low blood sugar with Ozempic), and any personal or family history of thyroid cancer.1
- Agree a plan. Treatment starts at 0.25 mg once weekly for 4 weeks before stepping up to 0.5 mg.1 Our dose converter shows how the steps compare across semaglutide brands.
- Fill it at a state-licensed pharmacy.4
- Learn the pen before the first dose. How to inject Ozempic walks through it.
Ozempic prescription online: can I get Ozempic online?
Yes, provided a licensed clinician writes the prescription after an assessment and a licensed pharmacy fills it. Online is a channel, not a shortcut: the FDA's rules about who can prescribe and who can dispense apply in the same way.4
The FDA points consumers to its BeSafeRx resources for checking whether an online pharmacy is legitimate.4 Red flags include a seller that does not ask for a prescription, products labeled for research use, and vials of semaglutide in a "salt" form, which the FDA notes is a different active ingredient from the one in approved drugs.4
Where to get Ozempic
Ozempic is dispensed by state-licensed retail, mail-order and online pharmacies, including Novo Nordisk's own NovoCare Pharmacy.47 NovoCare Pharmacy serves people paying out of pocket: once a prescriber sends the prescription and it is processed, the patient gets a text to set up an account, pay, and choose delivery or pickup.7
What you pay depends on insurance, dose and the channel. Current list and self-pay prices are tracked on Ozempic cost, and the cheapest legitimate routes are compared on cheap GLP-1 options. Medicare rules are covered in Medicare GLP-1 coverage.
What about compounded semaglutide?
Compounded semaglutide is not Ozempic and is not FDA approved.5 The FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality before they reach patients.5
During the shortage, pharmacies were allowed to compound copies. The FDA declared the semaglutide shortage resolved on February 21, 2025.5 The enforcement-discretion period then ended in April 2025 for state-licensed pharmacies and on May 22, 2025, for outsourcing facilities.5 On April 30, 2026, the FDA proposed excluding semaglutide from the list of bulk substances that outsourcing facilities may compound from, finding no clinical need when approved drugs are available.6
The FDA had received 990 adverse event reports involving compounded semaglutide as of May 31, 2026.4 Our compounded semaglutide page tracks which providers still offer it and on what basis, and compounded semaglutide vs Ozempic compares the two.
FAQ
Is Ozempic FDA approved for weight loss? No. Its approved uses are all in adults with type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is the semaglutide brand approved for weight management.12 More detail is in what is Ozempic.
Can a telehealth doctor prescribe Ozempic? Yes, if they are licensed and judge it appropriate after an assessment. The prescription must still be filled at a state-licensed pharmacy.4
Is there an Ozempic pill? Yes. In early 2026 the FDA approved renaming the R2 formulation of Rybelsus, an oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes, as Ozempic tablets.8 Like the injection, it needs a prescription.
Can I switch from Ozempic to Wegovy? They contain the same drug at different doses, and should not be taken together.2 A switch is a prescriber's decision; Ozempic vs Wegovy explains the differences.
What should I know about side effects before asking? Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and constipation are the most common.1 Ozempic side effects covers them, along with the boxed warning.
