Best Time of Day to Take Mounjaro, Zepbound, Wegovy and Ozempic

The FDA labels set no best time of day to take Zepbound, Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic shots. The day matters, not the hour. Read each label's timing rules.

Quick answer

There is no best time of day to take Mounjaro, Zepbound, Wegovy or Ozempic injections: each FDA label says to inject once a week at any time of day, with or without meals. The day matters, not the hour. The Wegovy pill and Ozempic tablets are different: take them in the morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of water, then wait 30 minutes. Foundayo, a daily tablet, has no set time of day.

There is no best time of day to take Mounjaro, Zepbound, Wegovy or Ozempic injections: each FDA label says to inject once a week at any time of day, with or without meals.1234 What the labels care about is the day, not the hour. The tablets are different. The Wegovy pill and Ozempic tablets must be taken in the morning on an empty stomach.35

Below are the exact timing rules from each label, including how to change your injection day and what the labels say about nausea.

GLP‑1 timing rules at a glance

Weekly injections are flexible on time of day; daily semaglutide tablets are strict about the morning and an empty stomach.

What is the best time of day to take Mounjaro?

Any time of day works for Mounjaro, according to its label, as long as it is once a week.1 The label does not compare morning and evening doses, and it gives no reason to prefer one.1 Food timing does not matter either: Mounjaro can be taken with or without meals.1

Tirzepatide reaches its peak in the blood a median of 24 hours after an injection, with a range of 8 to 72 hours.2 That delay is one reason the hour of the injection matters less than keeping a steady weekly rhythm.

If you miss a dose, the label says to take it within 4 days (96 hours). After that, skip it and take the next dose on your usual day.1 Our missed dose tool works out the window, and Mounjaro dosage covers the step-up schedule.

When to take Zepbound: morning or night?

Zepbound can be taken in the morning or at night; the label says once weekly at any time of day, with or without meals.2 Zepbound and Mounjaro contain the same drug, tirzepatide, and share the same timing rules.12 Our Mounjaro vs Zepbound comparison explains how the two brands differ in approved uses and price.

To move your injection day, keep at least 3 days (72 hours) between the two doses.2 The label also notes that tirzepatide can make birth control pills less effective, so people using them should switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase.2 See how to inject Zepbound for the injection steps.

What is the best time to take compounded tirzepatide?

Compounded tirzepatide is not FDA-approved and has no FDA label.7 The only FDA-reviewed timing guidance for tirzepatide is the brand label's: once weekly, at any time of day.2 Follow the directions your prescriber and pharmacy give you. Our ranking of compounded tirzepatide programs compares the services that prescribe it.

What is the best time of day to take Wegovy?

For the Wegovy injection, any time of day on the same day each week; for the Wegovy pill, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.3 The injection label adds that the time of day and the injection site can be changed without changing the dose.3

The Wegovy pill has firm rules:3

  • Take one tablet once daily in the morning on an empty stomach.
  • Swallow it whole with up to 4 ounces of plain water, and no other liquid.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other oral medicines.

The rules exist because of absorption. Semaglutide from the tablet is absorbed mainly in the stomach, and in a study described in the label, absorption was higher after a longer fasting period following the dose.3 Read our Wegovy pill guide, or see our oral GLP-1 rankings for programs that prescribe it.

What is the best time to take Ozempic?

The Ozempic injection can be taken at any time of day, on the same day each week, with or without meals.4 If a dose is missed, the label says to take it within 5 days; after that, skip it and take the next dose on the usual day.4

Ozempic tablets follow the same morning rules as the Wegovy pill: an empty stomach, up to 4 ounces of water, and a 30-minute wait.5 The label states that Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets cannot be swapped milligram for milligram.5 For the injection versus Wegovy, see Ozempic vs Wegovy.

Best time to take Wegovy to avoid nausea

No GLP-1 label recommends a time of day to reduce nausea; the labels manage nausea through the slow dose step-up instead.32 Nausea was reported by 44% of adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg in the weight trials, against 16% on placebo.3 If a dose is not tolerated, the Wegovy label lets prescribers delay the next increase for 4 weeks.3

For tirzepatide, most nausea, vomiting and diarrhea in the Zepbound trials happened during dose escalation and decreased over time.2 If nausea is a problem, ask your prescriber about the dose schedule rather than changing it yourself. Our guides to Wegovy side effects and Zepbound side effects cover the full tables.

Foundayo: the daily pill without fasting rules

Foundayo, the daily orforglipron tablet, is taken once a day with or without food, and its label sets no time of day.6 It is a different drug from oral semaglutide, so the empty-stomach rules of the Wegovy pill do not apply.63 See Foundayo vs Wegovy and what is Foundayo.
