GLP‑1 Pills vs Injections: Do the Pills Work as Well as the Shots?

Do GLP-1 pills work? The Wegovy pill and Foundayo produced 13.6% and 11.1% weight loss in trials. Compare every FDA-approved pill with the injections.

Quick answer

GLP-1 pills work, though the strongest injections still lead. The two pills approved for weight loss, the Wegovy pill and Foundayo, produced average losses of 13.6% and 11.1% of body weight in their trials, against 20.9% for Zepbound 15 mg. The pills are taken once daily and the injections once weekly. There is no FDA-approved tirzepatide pill. Every pill and injection carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors.

GLP-1 pills work: the two approved for weight loss, the Wegovy pill and Foundayo, produced average losses of 13.6% and 11.1% of body weight in their trials, though the strongest injections still lead.12 Zepbound, an injection, produced 20.9% at its top dose.5 This guide lists every FDA-approved GLP-1 pill, compares GLP-1 pills vs injections on results, rules and cost, and explains where the pills can be bought.

Do GLP‑1 pills work?

Yes. In a 64-week trial, adults taking the Wegovy 25 mg tablet lost an average of 13.6% of body weight, against 2.4% on placebo.1 In a 72-week trial, adults taking Foundayo 17.2 mg lost an average of 11.1%, against 2.1% on placebo.2 Both figures count everyone randomized, including people who stopped.12

The diabetes pills work too, for blood sugar. Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets are approved to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes and to reduce cardiovascular risk in those at high risk.3 They are not approved for weight loss.3

Every FDA-approved GLP‑1 pill

As of October 2026 there are four GLP-1 tablets with FDA approval: two for weight management and two for type 2 diabetes.

The FDA approved the Wegovy pill on December 22, 2025, and Foundayo on April 1, 2026.78 Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets share one label, and the label says the two are not interchangeable milligram for milligram.3

GLP‑1 pill vs injection: how they compare

GLP-1 pills are taken every day and the injections once a week. That is the core difference, and the rest follows from it.

Are GLP‑1 pills as effective as the shots?

For semaglutide, the pill is close to the shot. The Wegovy 2.4 mg injection produced an average loss of 14.9% at 68 weeks, against 13.6% at 64 weeks for the 25 mg pill.1 The label says average semaglutide blood levels were similar on the two in people without type 2 diabetes, but lower on the pill in people with type 2 diabetes.1

Against tirzepatide, the pills trail. Zepbound 15 mg produced an average loss of 20.9% at 72 weeks in its trial.5 No pill has been tested head-to-head against Zepbound, so these are comparisons across separate trials. Our Foundayo vs Zepbound comparison sets the two Lilly drugs side by side.

Side effects: pills vs injections

The pills cause the same kind of side effects as the injections, mostly nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation.12 The Wegovy label says the common reactions with the tablet were similar in type and frequency to those with the 2.4 mg injection.1 On Foundayo 17.2 mg, nausea affected 35% of people, against 10% on placebo.2 Every pill and injection in this guide carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors.1235

Does Zepbound come in pill form?

No. Zepbound is only an injection, sold as a single-dose pen, single-dose vial, multi-dose vial or KwikPen.5 Lilly's GLP-1 pill for weight loss is Foundayo, which contains a different drug, orforglipron.2 See what is Foundayo for how the two compare.

Does tirzepatide come in pill form?

No. There is no FDA-approved tirzepatide tablet. Tirzepatide is sold only as the injections Zepbound and Mounjaro.56 A product sold online as a "tirzepatide pill" is not an approved drug; our guide to tirzepatide pills explains what those compounded tablets are.

Tirzepatide tablets vs injections

Because no tirzepatide tablet is approved, the real choice is between a tirzepatide injection and a different GLP-1 pill. Zepbound 15 mg led to 20.9% average weight loss at 72 weeks; Foundayo 17.2 mg led to 11.1% and the Wegovy pill 13.6%.521 For tirzepatide routes and prices, see how to get Zepbound and tirzepatide online.

Ozempic pill vs shot

The Ozempic pill and the Ozempic shot are both semaglutide for type 2 diabetes, but they are dosed differently. Ozempic tablets start at 1.5 mg daily for 30 days, then rise to 4 mg, and to 9 mg if more glucose control is needed.3 The Ozempic injection is a weekly shot.4 The tablet must be taken each morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of water, followed by a 30-minute wait; the injection has no such rule.34

Neither is approved for weight loss. The weight-loss versions of semaglutide are the Wegovy injection and the Wegovy pill.1 Our Ozempic vs Wegovy comparison explains the differences between the two brands.

Oral vs injectable semaglutide

Oral semaglutide needs much larger doses than injectable semaglutide because little of it is absorbed: about 1% to 2% of a tablet dose reaches the bloodstream, against 89% of an injected dose.1 The Wegovy pill's maintenance dose is 25 mg a day, against 2.4 mg a week for the Wegovy injection.1 The tablet contains an absorption enhancer, salcaprozate sodium (SNAC).1 The Wegovy label allows switching from the 2.4 mg injection to the 25 mg pill one week after the last injection.1 The full Wegovy comparison is in the Wegovy pill vs injection guide.

How much do GLP‑1 pills cost?

The Wegovy pill costs $149 a month at 1.5 mg, $199 at 4 mg and $299 at 9 mg and 25 mg at Novo Nordisk's self-pay price, checked October 7, 2026.9 Foundayo costs $149 a month at 0.8 mg and 2.5 mg, $199 at 5.5 mg and $299 at 9 mg to 17.2 mg, with two of those prices temporary through December 31, 2026.10 For comparison, the Wegovy pen costs $349 a month and Zepbound $449 a month at its higher doses.911 Live prices are on the Wegovy cost page, and our GLP-1 pill ranking lists the programs that prescribe each tablet.

Where can I buy GLP‑1 pills?

GLP-1 pills are prescription-only. You need a prescription from a licensed clinician, in person or through telehealth, and then a licensed pharmacy to fill it. Novo Nordisk sells the Wegovy pill through NovoCare Pharmacy with home delivery or pharmacy pickup.9 Lilly says Foundayo is available through LillyDirect, telehealth providers and US retail pharmacies.8

Avoid any website that sells GLP-1 drugs without a prescription or labels them "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption." The FDA has warned companies selling semaglutide, tirzepatide and similar drugs that way, and says such products are of unknown quality and may be harmful.12 The FDA advises buying only from state-licensed pharmacies.12 Our oral GLP-1 rankings list telehealth programs that prescribe the approved pills.
